Family Law Experience
Since 2005, Mr. Kelly has practiced exclusively family law. In that time, Mr. Kelly has represented at least 500 family and juvenile law clients in all types of different family and juvenile law matters, and he has tried more than one hundred different types of hearings and trials. He has prepared numerous other hearings and trials that settled shortly before or during the hearing or trial. He has settled hundreds of cases, in direct negotiations, mediation and judicial settlement conferences.
Law School Experience
Mr. Kelly has been an Oregon attorney since 1993, but his trial and courtroom experience began before he even graduated from law school. As a second year law student, he sought practical real world experience to complement his academic success in law school. He gained this by working “in the trenches” for the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office as a certified law student intern. While there, Mr. Kelly laid a strong foundation in his efforts to become a persuasive, ethical and compassionate advocate. Before graduating from law school, he had already conducted more than So trials, researched and argued countless motions, negotiated in hundreds of cases, and appeared in court on a daily basis. As a result, he graduated from law school with more courtroom and trial experience than many lawyers receive in a lifetime.
After Graduation
After graduating from law school, Mr. Kelly was hired as a law clerk for a Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge who had presided over one of his early trials as a law student. This judge characterized him as one of the most gifted young lawyers who had ever appeared in her courtroom.
As a law clerk, he worked effectively and easily with both the public and fellow court staff, including judges, juries, witnesses, police officers, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and civil attorneys. In this position, Mr. Kelly was able to observe hundreds of lawyers-good and bad, and dozens of trials-winners and losers. This first-hand observation provided unique and invaluable, “behind the scenes” insight into the decision-making process of both judges and juries, and what persuades them and what does not.
Beginning His Career As An Attorney
Mr. Kelly left his position as a law clerk to resume his career as a prosecutor for the Washington County District Attorney’s Office. Just as he had done in Multnomah County, he quickly built a reputation in Washington County among judges, defense lawyers and fellow prosecutors as an excellent lawyer who was always firm but also always fair. Before leaving this position, Mr. Kelly had prosecuted over 150 trials with great success. His final days with Washington County were spent supervising the juvenile department for the district attorney’s office. In this position, he prosecuted countless juvenile dependency and juvenile delinquency cases. Mr. Kelly found this to be the most rewarding position he held as a prosecutor because it allowed him to have a meaningful impact upon the lives of many children and families.
From 1998 to Present
In 1998, after more than four years at the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Kelly left prosecution and moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he continued his litigation career in civil practice with one of Chicago’s largest law firms. His skills were immediately recognized by his new employer. As a result, he was chosen to lead numerous trips lo England, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands on behalf of a Fortune 500 client involved in a groundbreaking, multibillion dollar lawsuit.
Although Mr. Kelly’s work in Chicago provided many interesting and challenging opportunities, he missed all that Portland offers, so he returned after several years to continue his career in litigation where it began in Oregon. After returning to Oregon, he worked for two different highly respected civil firms, the first was a Portland firm specializing in complex and class action insurance defense and insurance coverage litigation, and the second was a very well-respected and long-standing insurance defense firm in Hillsboro.
In 2005, Mr. Kelly began to focus only on family law and domestic relations matters at another law firm, and he has practiced exclusively Family law ever since. In 2017, after over 12 solid years as a successful partner in the other firm providing top quality family law and domestic relations service for his clients, Mr. Kelly branched out on his own and opened his own firm, Kevin L. Kelly, P.C., where he continues to guide his clients to a better life.
